UNDERSTANDING YOUR STRESS RESPONSES
FLIPPING YOUR LID:
Our "Flipping Your Lid" resources in this pack not only explain our brain's & body's responses to stress (or when in the Red Zone) with information and colourful & easy-to-comprehend diagrams, but also likens the brain parts to animals that students can relate to.
A 'story' using these animals as characters is a cute way to visualise the events happening in the brain when calm or stressed. Hand signal posters & puppet prints are included to support understanding of stress response in the brain kinaesthetically which may also be used as a classroom management tool to assist students to communicate their ability to cope with activities that may heighten their emotions (eg introducing a new concept or skill, preparing for an oral presentation, attending a loud or quiet event such as assembly where students may be overstimulated or require movement).

IDEAS FOR USE


CALM CORNER: Check-in to the calm corner on their way into the classroom/home prior to morning meetings or circles. Use pegs with their names on them or attach to a magnetic whiteboard and use magnetic name tags to indicate where they are on the scale.

CHECK-IN FOLDER: Create individual check-in folders with resources glued into a manilla folder with either the desk version with (or without) explanations or a reduced horizontal or vertical Power Scale alongside the Self-care Power Tools. Allow the children to personalise their cover with different emotions or emojis. Check-In with these at various times throughout the day. Add strategies to their Power Tool kit as they find new strategies that work.

CHECK-IN JOURNAL: Glue a reduced sized vertical 2:1 page Power Scale into the inside cover of an A5 exercise book, the Self-care Power Tools in the back cover and information sheet/s in the front pages. Trim the journal pages so that the scale can be seen on side of each page. Get students to record their self-reflections daily (in words or illustrations):
1. number of the scale & energy levels,
2. emotions,
3. sensations in their body (body signs),
4. situation which may have contributed to their emotions,
5. thoughts, and
6. self-care strategies they will try to get back to their happy place (green zone)

CHARADES: Play charades with a range of emotions to demonstrate how they look in their body, then categorise them into the 4x Zones of Emotions. Create a list of these to be displayed in the home/room or in their books.

CHECK-IN CORNER: Check-in to the calm corner when in the Blue, Yellow or Red zones to identify how you feel and self-care strategies you can try to calm down, ready to learn. Then check-out when in the Green Zone.

VARIED-SIZE PRINTING: Some resources are created for high-resolution printing in A3, but they may be printed at 4 to 1 page or smaller for more intimate 1:1 check-ins or activities like categorising.

MONITOR STRESS LEVELS: Incorporate hand signals or the traffic light system to encourage children to monitor their stress levels associated with the current or upcoming activity.

FLIP CHARTS: Laminate your choice of Zones information posters or cards, add a ring to the corner and make zone cards for the children to flip through to indicate their current zone for teacher or carers to see at a glance.

Hi, I’m Lauren of Balanced ‘n’ Bright Kids, a family business composed of my son, daughter & myself.
I am a ‘conscious’ solo Mumma with a love of learning and teaching, graphic design, holistic wellness, essential oils, gardening, DIY projects, connecting with other Mums, bushwalking and so much more. I am a solution-focused nurturer with load of ideas always pouring into my mind, pay high attention to detail and have a need to master everything I learn.
My children and I have been through some challenging & turbulent times together where we have learnt a great deal of lessons to support our mental wellbeing. I learned the hard way just how important self-care is as a Mum! I lost myself and had to rediscover so many aspects of who I am.
I used my love of learning to empower myself with studies of stress management, nurturing the child’s developing brain, trauma-informed education, conscious parenting, various holistic healing modalities and so much more. (I told you I love learning!) It has shifted the way I parent and teach in a profound way, valuing above all the importance of self-awareness and self-care as a priority.
Now I am passionate about empowering other women & children to honour themselves & their needs and am extra determined to support families to connect and thrive together.
When you know better, you do better!! I am far from perfect, but I do hope that parents, teachers and practitioners can learn from my lessons through the resources, blogs and services that we offer.
